FEATURING ERIKA ANDIOLA – A new poll by Bloomberg has found that, as unpopular as Donald Trump is as president, his rival Hillary Clinton who won the popular vote last November, is remarkably even less popular. Trump has a 41% approval rating while Clinton’s is 39%. The number should strike fear into the hearts of the Democrats who are hoping to regain control of Congress in 2018, banking on Trump and the Republican Party’s unpopularity.

Now, progressive organizations are calling Democrats out, demanding that they adopt a “People’s Platform,” as part of a “Summer for Progress.” Groups like Our Revolution and the National Nurses United are insisting that Democrats support 8 crucial bills in the House that address the lives of ordinary Americans. The question is, would Democrats rather fail than live up to their stated ideals?

FEATURING ADAM SCOW – The state of California on Monday voted to extend its cap-and-trade program until 2030, leading Governor Jerry Brown to declare a major victory and claim credit for making progress on climate change.

The bill, AB 398, was also supported by Democratic Senate president Kevin De Leon, one of the more progressive lawmakers, as well as some Republicans.

The cap-and-trade program essentially imposes a cap on carbon emissions in the nation’s most populous state, enabling corporations to buy and sell the rights to pollute.

While the measure is being reported as a major success for climate justice, particularly when compared to the inaction and even regressive climate measures at the federal level, it turns out not all environmental groups are happy. Food and Water Watch along with a number of leading environmental organizations have denounced the extension of cap-and-trade calling it “an industry giveaway.”

FEATURING ERIC SCHNEIDER – The Republican Party has faced yet another defeat over its long-standing plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. Two more senators, Mike Lee of Utah and Jerry Moran of Kansas announced they would not support the Better Care Reconciliation Act this week, soon after it was reported that Senator John McCain was recovering from a major surgery and would not be available to vote for weeks.

Amid the national debate on healthcare, a new report by the Commonwealth Fund compared the American system to that of ten other industrialized Western nations. The report concluded that the US’s healthcare system had the highest cost but lowest performance compared to the other countries, and in the US one’s income was the strongest factor in determining one’s level of accessible care compared to the rest.

FEATURING ANDY FISHER – Every year millions of Americans rely on food banks and pantries to feed themselves. Donations to food banks are considered one of the most effective ways to combat persistent hunger in the US.

But what many of us don’t realize is that food charity was meant to be a response to an emergency, not a sustained means of feeding the hungry. After all, shouldn’t ending hunger and ending the need for food charity be the ultimate, long-term goal?

Not according to many of the corporate board members of so many food banks in the US who, according to my guest, are part of a sinister “Food-industrial-complex,” that refuses to address income inequality and low wages to end hunger.

EVENT: Andy Fisher will speak at an upcoming event in Santa Monica. WHERE: The Gallery Food Hall, 1315 Third Street Promenade (between Arizona Ave. and Santa Monica Blvd) upstairs patio. WHEN: Tuesday August 1st 6:30 pm. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit farmersmarket.smgov.net.

**CORRECTION: We mistakenly titled the video segment as ‘The Untold Alliance…’– the correct title should’ve been: ‘The Unholy Alliance…’.

FEATURING EVE BARROW – As thousands of Americans flock to Southern California this summer for their dream Disneyland vacation, the so-called “Happiest Place on Earth” is having some PR problems.

Advocates for the homeless recently leafletted the Anaheim Convention Center where an expo for Disney fans was taking place. Later that evening they staged a “sleep-out” in front of Disneyland. The activists are calling out Disneyland, one of the largest employers in Orange County, California, for failing to pay its workers a living wage.

Additionally Disneyland has also come under fire because the city of Anaheim arranged for bus stop benches near its location to be removed – benches that homeless people often slept on. Some of Disneyland’s own employees are among the local homeless population.

FEATURING CAROLYN SUFRIN – Democratic Senators Cory Booker of New Jersey and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts in early July 2017 introduced a bill in Congress to improve the treatment of female inmates, including ending the practice of shackling pregnant women while they give birth. The Dignity for Incarcerated Women Act addresses the fastest growing prison population in the US – women.

Pregnant women in particular face harsh conditions during their incarceration. But ironically, conditions in the nation as a whole are so severe that some women actually get better medical care within prisons than before their incarceration.

FEATURING PHYLLIS BENNIS – The Iraqi government recently declared victory in Mosul, the stronghold of the Islamic State. Many months of fighting, bombing, and shelling has reduced the once grand and historic city to rubble while tens of thousands of its residents have fled.

Despite Iraq’s triumphant declarations of having defeated ISIS, pockets of fighting remain active and there are reports of a hundred or more residents being trapped in the city.

The fight against ISIS in Iraq has been used to justify on-going American involvement in the war-torn nation. Under the Trump administration that situation is likely to escalate given the President’s bombastic campaign rhetoric.

But her goal appeared not to be how best to support women victims of rape, but how best to absolve men accused of rape – a favorite topic of so-called “men’s rights groups” that are active online.

Jackson told press, “[T]he accusations — 90 percent of them — fall into the category of ‘we were both drunk,’ ‘we broke up, and six months later I found myself under a Title IX investigation because she just decided that our last sleeping together was not quite right.'”

FEATURING CHRIS HEDGES – News media in recent days have breathlessly pronounced that the Donald Trump Jr. emails about being interested in gathering dirt about Hillary Clinton from Russian sources are tantamount to collusion at best, treason at worst.

The “i” word, impeachment, has once more become commonplace. But is potential collusion with Russia the worst thing that President Trump done? When we consider the relentless assault on constitutional rights, the cruel attacks on immigrants, the nods to white supremacists, the fueling of Islamophobia, the undermining of climate accords, and the huge number of industry and corporate representatives he has stacked his cabinet with, is the Russia story really the big one?

FEATURING WILLIAM ROBINSON – In the past decade or so, college and university campuses in the US have become fertile grounds for public education campaigns about the Israeli occupation and domination of Palestinians.

Student groups have organized conferences, expanded campaigns for the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement against Israeli Apartheid.

Professors and lecturers have shed light on what is really happening on the ground in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, and challenged students to see through the media bias on this issue.

But just as successful as these movements have been, the individuals involved have faced harsh criticism, silencing, and even persecution.

A new book collects the stories of rampant silencing of Israel’s critics in the academy, from the stories of Steven Salaita to the Irvine 11.

William Robinson, professor of sociology, global and international studies, and Latin American studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is also the editor of, and a contributor to a new anthology called We Will Not Be Silenced: The Academic Repression of Israel’s Critics.

FEATURING PAUL SEAMUS RYAN – The political and media world is in a major frenzy over revelations from Donald Trump Jr. that he had a meeting with a Russian lawyer who promised him damaging information about Hillary Clinton ahead of last year’s election. After speaking to the New York Times about the meeting the younger Trump posted to his Twitter account his email thread with Rob Goldstone, a music publicist who helped him contact the lawyer.

Does the story actually amount to collusion between a presidential campaign and a foreign government with the purpose of interfering in the US electoral process? That is the major question that has eclipsed so much else in Washington DC this week.

FEATURING KSHAMA SAWANT – The Seattle City Council earlier this week passed a historic legislation to tax incomes of wealthy residents of their city. The measure to raise income taxes from 2 percent to 2 and a quarter percent passed unanimously. It affects individuals making more than $250,000 a year and couples making more than half a million a year.

How did such a measure, modest as it is, get passed in these times when politicians fear raising taxes on anyone especially wealthy people? Can other city councils follow suit? To find out we’ll turn to one Seattle City Council member who is credited with being the main force behind the tax increase.

But all he has done since entering the White House is flood the swamp with industry representatives and lobbyists. Goldman Sachs and Exxon Mobil can rest easy knowing that their interests will be easily represented in the Trump Administration.

But what about the rest of us? What about the interests of ordinary Americans that often clash with that of profit-driven corporate elites?

It turns out it’s not so difficult to influence our own government and today we’ll look at several examples of how ordinary Americans have become empowered citizen lobbyists.

In Charlottesville, Virginia recently a few dozen KKK members, some of whom donned the signature white hoods, rallied out in the open while more than a thousand counter protesters pushed back.

Police used tear gas and arrested 23 people. Some counter protesters said law enforcement appeared to protect the hate group at the expense of others.

FEATURRING LEANN HALL – Eighty protesters were arrested in Washington DC this week as activists greeted Republican lawmakers returning from recess. The protests were held over the controversial American Health Care Act at 13 different locations in various House and Senate buildings.

The House passed the AHCA and it is now in the Senate’s court to vote on its version of the bill. But, given the unpopularity of the bill and the political controversy around Donald Trump Jr.’s meetings with Russian contacts, Republicans are rapidly running out of time on their central campaign.

From the Zapatista movement in Mexico, to the anti-World Trade Organization protests in Seattle, to Occupy Wall Street, Arab Spring, Black Lives Matter, Standing Rock, and the Women’s March, social movements have taken full advantage of digital technologies to mobilize large numbers of people. But we are still evolving these tools and assessing their strengths and weaknesses. There is both “power and fragility” in organizing in this manner.

FEATURING KEVIN MARTIN – Anti-nuclear activists the world over rejoiced when more than 120 countries at the United Nations last week formally adopted a “Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.”

The treaty is strongly worded and requires that signatories, “never under any circumstances … develop, test, produce, manufacture, otherwise acquire, possess or stockpile nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices.”

In September the UN will formally open the treaty for signatures and once at least 50 nations have signed on, nuclear weapons prohibition becomes international law.

Unsurprisingly the US boycotted the treaty adoption process along with 8 other nuclear-armed countries.

FEATURING HOLLYE DEXTER – When NRA’s spokeswoman Dana Loesch’s video we posted to the gun lobby group’s Facebook page, progressives took notice. The 1-minute video was filled with ominous visuals, vaguely worded warnings of threats to freedom, and polarizing language, meeting all the hallmarks of classic propaganda techniques. It did not appear to strike the NRA as ironic that the strongest proponent of arming the US population was claiming the mantle of safety and freedom against the liberal establishment.

In response the Women’s March and a number of other organizations published a statement denouncing the video as “incendiary,” and called on a march on the NRA’s headquarters later this week. Also in response, the Los Angeles chapter of Black Lives Matter issued its own video.

The video wars then continued as another NRA spokesman Grant Stinchfield published a 4-minute long screed identifying Women’s March leader Tamika Mallory by name and image, and angrily wagging his finger at the screen using terms like the “violent left” while saying the NRA would never apologize.

FEATURING RACHEL CURLEY – Walter Shaub, the head of the Office of Government Ethics has resigned after months of wrangling with the Trump administration. Shaub said he had not been pressured to step down about 6 months before his term was set to expire. In his resignation letter to President Trump, he wrote, “public service is a public trust, requiring employees to place loyalty to the Constitution, the laws and ethical principles above private gain.”

The resignation of a federal official would ordinarily not invoke much attention. But, as the New York Times put it, the news is significant in, “Mr. Trump’s Washington, where the vast holdings of the president and his cabinet, as well as an influx of advisers from businesses and lobbying firms, have raised a rash of accusations of conflicts of interest.”

FEATURING LAILA ABDELAZIZ – A poll by Politico and Morning Consult recently found 60% support among the public for the Federal Communications Commission’s existing rules on Net Neutrality. The Obama-era rules were put in place after years of campaigning by grassroots activists who want to prevent the Internet from becoming a corporatized space. But Donald Trump’s new FCC Chair Ajit Pai wants to do away with the rules that currently restrain major Internet Service Providers such Comcast, Time-Warner and AT&T from upending Net Neutrality.

Across the political spectrum, advocacy groups, content creators, and even major online websites like Twitter, Amazon, Netflix, Reddit, Vimeo, and Etsy are converging on a “Day of Action” next Wednesday the 12th of July to protest Ajit Pai’s plan to end Net Neutrality. On that day, thousands of websites will display messages urging their users to send letters and comments supporting Net Neutrality. The online action may break the previous record of Internet activism in 2012 against two bills called SOPA and PIPA.

FEATURING JIMMY TOBIAS – Many Americans are looking for pathways out of the dangerous political moment we find ourselves in as Donald Trump and his party ram their way over the Constitution, and Democrats too often back off from the fight for progressive values. But a new front in the battle for social, environmental, and economic justice is emerging: cities. Around the world cities are filling the vacuum of state-level leadership on issues of great importance.

FEATURING WENDY PEARLMAN – Syria and its unending war remain in the news after many long years of fighting, bloodshed, and displacement. Often the voices of ordinary Syrians, who bear the biggest brunt of violence, are left out of media narratives. My guest aims to rectify that in a new book that was years in the making.

Wendy Pearlman spent four years talking to Syrians wherever she could: in Jordan and Germany and everywhere in between. She spoke with doctors, students, former soldiers, accountants, TV news reporters, school-teachers, playwrights, stay-at-home mothers, shop keepers, and engineers.

Pearlman took her massive trove of interviews and turned them into a powerful book that gives collective voice to ordinary Syrians and personifies the targets of Bashar Al-Assad and the West’s war.

Wendy Pearlman, professor at Northwestern University, author of two earlier acclaimed books on Palestine called Occupied Voices: Stories of Everyday Life From the Second Intifada; and Violence, Nonviolence, and the Palestinian National Movement. Her newest book is called We Crossed a Bridge and it Trembled: Voices From Syria.

FEATURING TIM SHORROCK – North Korea’s testing of an intercontinental ballistic missile on Tuesday set off yet another flurry of speculation about ratcheting tensions with the US. Kim Jong-un’s regime described the missile as being capable of hitting Alaska. While the US has had various strategies in place to combat nuclear and conventional threats from North Korea, under President Donald Trump, there is incoherence.

Initially Mr. Trump pushed China to exert its limited control over North Korea. Now, he is intent on Chinese sanctions instead.

Any US strike against North Korea will likely result in massive retaliation against neighboring US ally, South Korea and other regional nations.

Should the current situation be viewed through the lens of two unstable leaders of well-armed nations dangerously facing off against one another?

Tim Shorrock, Washington-based journalist who spent part of his youth in South Korea and has been writing about North and South Korea since the late 1970s. He just returned from a two month stay in Gwangju, South Korea, where during the Korean president campaign he interviewed South Korea’s President Moon Jae-In. He writes about US-Korea relations for The Nation and the Korea Center for Investigative Reporting.

FEATURING BEDABRATA PAIN – India’s Narendra Modi continues his travels, visiting with his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu this week, and becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Israel. The visit comes just days after Mr. Modi visited Donald Trump at the White House and was photographed hugging the US President warmly. Modi has come down firmly on the side of authoritarian and right-wing leaning leaders. His foreign jaunts come at the same time as mass protests in Indian cities are denouncing anti-Muslim violence. The protests, dubbed #NotInMyName, have received widespread news coverage, undermining Modi’s triumphant international photo-ops.

Bedabrata Pain, ex-NASA scientist, an inventor of the digital camera technologies, an activist, and now a film-maker – whose first film CHITTAGONG (based on a forgotten uprising) won the Indian National Award (the highest award) as the best debut film. he is currently working on his next film in india, tentatively titled DISAPPEARED.
