FEATURING CLÉMENT PETITJEAN – France has been rocked by labor protests this year in the wake of a government push for a highly unpopular set of labor reform laws. Despite unrelenting street demonstrations that denounced the laws as pro-business and anti-worker, they were pushed through Parliament anyway.

Is the move a reflection on the failure of the French left? It was just a few years ago that the Left Party in France sought to challenge the Socialist Party, whose leader Francois Hollande is currently the nation’s Prime Minister.

Clément Petitjean, is a doctoral candidate in American civilization in Paris and a member of Ensemble! He is also a contributor to the new anthology, Europe in Revolt and his essay is entitled What Happened to the French Left?
