FEATURING MALINDA MAYNOR LOWERY – The story of the origins of the United States is told using gauzy language in our history textbooks, as a myth of persecuted people settling on a largely empty nation with friendly native tribes helping out. Such a story couldn’t be farther from the truth. As Native Americans struggle to be seen and heard even today, we’ll focus on a fascinating story on our show about Lumbee Indians – the largest tribe in America East of the Mississippi and its struggle for federal recognition.

Malinda Maynor Lowery (Lumbee), Associate Professor of History and Director of the Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her earlier book is called Lumbee Indians in the Jim Crow South. Her newest book is Lumbee Indians: An American Struggle.
